Integrating Mindfulness into Tobacco Cessation: A Review of Clinical Insights and Evidence

Abstract

A significant portion of the universal health threat is attributed to tobacco consumption, which perpetuates a rising concern of preventable morbidity and mortality (Vinci, 2020). Notwithstanding the array of abstinence methods available, including pharmacotherapy, nicotine replacement therapy, behavioral therapy, and digital apps, the smoking relapse rates continue to be an unresolved matter. Psychological disquiet encompassing craving, stress, anxiety, and depression serves to aggravate the issue (Hecht et al., 2018; Vibe et al., 2010). Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) is a comprehensive regimen that follows a holistic approach of practicing mindfulness, meditation, yoga, and body scanning. It has come to light as an effective intervention in addressing both physical and psychological well-being during smoking cessation, being implemented as an adjunctive measure (Michalsen et al., 2004). This literature review critically analyzes the literature on MBSR's proficiency in diminishing stress, enhancing craving management, and improving emotional regulation (Davis et al., 2015). The review synthesizes findings from multiple studies, comparing MBSR to other cessation interventions and exploring its potential long-term benefits. However, pronounced shortfalls remain, particularly regarding long-term outcomes due to short follow-ups and their applicability to diverse populations. Subsequent studies ought to address these limitations to determine MBSR's full potential in tobacco cessation programs.
