Abstract

Aims: To evaluate the changes in upper airway after first premolar extractions in Class II division 1 patients.
Methods and Material: Pretreatment and Post treatment lateral cephalograms of 20 Class II division 1(ANB =5°, FMA = 31°) patients were used in the present study. Patients were treated by extraction of all four first premolars. Airway dimensions were evaluated using lateral cephalograms. A paired t-test was used to analyse the data and observe the difference between the subjects.

Statistical analysis used: paired t-test
Results: The mean change in the upper incisor position at the end of the treatment was 6.3+4.3mm which was statistically significant. The change in lower incisor position was 1.05mm, however, the change was not statistically significant. There was a statistically significant change in maxillary incisor angulation with a mean change of 1.4 degrees. The mean change in lower incisor angulation was 4.3 degrees which was statistically significant. The mean difference of upper airway area between pretreatment and post-treatment was 1.13mm2 and for lower airway was 0.015mm2. both values were statistically insignificant

Conclusions: All four first premolar extractions did not affect the airway dimensions.
